A couple’s 50th wedding anniversary is known as their golden anniversary. 50 years of marriage is a huge accomplishment so the golden couple should make their special day even more meaningful.
However, there’s an elderly Italian couple with Covid-19 held hands across their beds with ventilators over their face to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in ICU (intensive care unit) after the help of medical staff.
Giancarlo, 73, and wife Sandra, 71 got infected with Covid-19 recently and were having treatments at the Murri Hospital in the east Italian region of Marche.
Roberta Ferretti, a nurse in the hospital, heard they were due to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Despite the busy and tiring days of fighting diseases, the medical staff decided to organize a party for them.
“Sandra cried a lot, not for herself, she was worried about her husband. He told me how much he still loved her, after so many years. When I found out that it was their anniversary, I thought they had to celebrate it. “ Ferretti said.
The party lasted only 10 minutes and as we could see from the photos, the staff in full protective gear were surrounding the golden couple and making heart symbols with their hands.
Ferretti added: “We put the 50 candle on a small cake because you cannot light it near oxygen, we played the Wedding March, they had their beds together and they held hands, with the little strength they still have. “
“It was an amazing moment, very beautiful, those minutes alone pay us for all the sacrifice we have made these days. He kept repeating how much he loves her, we broke into tears. In the air, you could feel the love you chase your whole life.”
Local media report that the old couple are getting better and recovering now from the virus. It is believed that they will be discharged together soon.
