Government Plans to Impose Additional Charges on Online Purchase to Help B40 Group

The Communications and Multimedia Ministry is planning to impose an additional charge of RM0.20 for purchases above RM200 and below RM1,000 on online platforms, reported by Malay Mail.

No additional charges will be imposed on online purchases below RM200. Above RM200 to RM1,000, additional charges imposed will be RM0.20. While the purchase that exceeds RM1,000 will be charged RM0.40, said its deputy minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin.

“The additional charges will be like the service charge and it was a measure to raise a special fund to assist the B40 group including to improve communications infrastructure in the rural areas,” he said in a community event in Pengkalan Petah.

“We are discussing the plan to be tabled to the government so as to find alternative resources which will not burden the people, and we also want to give the best services to them.

Earlier in his speech, Zahidi said the government plans to impose an additional charge for purchases made via e-commerce platforms such as Lazada and Shopee.
