It’s Time For Penguins in S’pore Zoo to Stroll Around & Explore playground

The Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, Jurong Bird Park and River Safari, has been closed since the lockdown on Apr 7.

Thus, the cute African penguins has been taking advantage of the empty premises during this period, taking a stroll and exploring the area outside their exhibit.

According to Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS), the penguins have been venturing out 2 to 3 times a week during this period.

These walks serve as a form of enrichment, enabling them to discover new spaces, sights and sounds which keeps them mentally and physically stimulated.

The zookeepers keep a close eye on them during their walks to guide them, and will do a headcount to make sure all individuals are present.

The penguins naturally move as a group, so where one goes, the rest tend to follow. So, the zookeepers just need to encourage the first one to move.

While you might be thinking penguins only live in the cold Antarctic region, but wild African penguins, as their name suggests, can be found breeding off the coasts of Africa as well.

This species can live in habitats with temperatures of up to 20ºC, their zookeepers let them out early in the morning for a more comfortable stroll.
