49-year-old Malaysian Director, Nevin Hiong who directed “Kampung Drift” 4 years ago, was busy with his latest production ” Miimaland” a Malay horror movie, a story that revolves around the abandoned “haunted” theme park Mimaland.

Mimaland started operating in 1975. It was built on a hilly area of 300 acres in Ulu Gombak, Kuala Lumpur. It used to be a popular spot among locals and tourists until a series of events led to the theme park’s closure in 1994.

In January 1993, a 27-year-old Singaporean was killed while using the giant slide at the Mimaland pool. The incident shocked the public and resulted in a temporary closure of Mimaland. After improvement was done to the giant slide, Mimaland was reopened.

However, a minor landslide caused damage to the walls of the same pool in May 1994. This incident caused muddy water to seep into the pool, causing the area to close again.

It was learned that the park was temporarily closed so improvements could be made for the safety of visitors. Unfortunately, after the incidents, Mimaland never reopened.

These days people head to Mimaland out of curiosity, especially since there have been claims that “mysterious and supernatural” incidents have happened at the site, making it one of the most popular “haunted” places in the country.

Nevin decided to adapt the urban legend into a film. He got Fattah Amin and Sophie Albarakbah to star the film. Some of the scenes were filmed in the entrance and around the “haunted” theme park. Although, the Malay and Chinese crew did the praying and doa before shooting started.
However, some “strange” incident happened.
Two cars’ engines die out of sudden. One mirror which is the prop for the shoot went missing and one of the production crew cried hysterically running towards the theme park entrance. Nevin and the team were shocked and quickly stopped the crew.

“Luckily, we managed to stop him from entering the theme park. A few of us carried him to the car, but he was still crying in the car. While another 2 crew were also crying without a reason,” he shared the creepy moment of the team during the shoot.
