49-year-old Malaysian Director, Nevin Hiong who directed “Kampung Drift” 4 years ago, was busy with his latest production ” Miimaland” a Malay horror movie, a story that revolves around the abandoned “haunted” theme park Mimaland.
Mimaland started operating in 1975. It was built on a hilly area of 300 acres in Ulu Gombak, Kuala Lumpur. It used to be a popular spot among locals and tourists until a series of events led to the theme park’s closure in 1994.
In January 1993, a 27-year-old Singaporean was killed while using the giant slide at the Mimaland pool. The incident shocked the public and resulted in a temporary closure of Mimaland. After improvement was done to the giant slide, Mimaland was reopened.
However, a minor landslide caused damage to the walls of the same pool in May 1994. This incident caused muddy water to seep into the pool, causing the area to close again.
It was learned that the park was temporarily closed so improvements could be made for the safety of visitors. Unfortunately, after the incidents, Mimaland never reopened.
Ariel and his wife Elize are offered to film a reality show in Miimaland, a haunted theme park. Desperate for the cash, especially with their first child on the way, the young couple takes up the offer and enters the isolated and deserted theme park with their crew and 2 Korean social media influencers.
Once they enter the overgrown forest that has taken over the theme park, the group is soon plagued by a series of dark and disturbing incidents. Ariel and Elize try to keep things together, but soon, it appears that Elize has fallen under the spell of the supernatural presence in the area. As the members of the team start to die in horrible ways, it is up to Ariel to uncover the macabre secret from the past that now has Elize in its grips, and save their unborn child.
“Miimaland” will be in the cinema from Sep 24 onwards. Let’s check out the trailer:
