To Search For Better Internet Connection, Students From Sabah Injured Falling From Suspension Bridge

In June, “Treetop girl” Veveonah Mosibin, a student from rural area of Sabah gained national attention after she made a video of herself camping on top of the tree just to get a better internet connection to sit for her online exams.

Again, another group of students from Kampung Gusi, 80km away from the nearest town of Ranau. You can imagine their conditions as you will need to drive 6 hours on the muddy perilous roads to reach their kampung.

These bunch of students of SMK Ulu Sugut, who do not want to miss out any of online classes. According to Malay mail, around 8 students were on the hanging bridge when it collapsed, unfortunately, one with broken leg another one with spinal injuries, the rest reportedly sustained light injuries after a 18-meter fall.

The tragedy happened on Nov 23, at 9pm, on the hanging bridge that was said to be one of the best spot for a better internet connection especially at night. Thus, a lot of students will go there for their online classes.

The wire mesh and wooden bridge is about 10 years old has been on and off repairs but it is rickety. There were about 8 students on the hanging bridge when its collapsed.

All the 8 students aged between 15 and 18 years’ old are currently receiving treatment at the Ranau district hospital.

Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam who was contacted confirmed the incident and said he will ask for allocation from the federal or state government to rebuild the bridge, reported by Berita Harian.

“I hope that the villagers can be patient and strong through this while we rebuild the bridge. I offer them my sympathies and hope the injured students will recover soon,” he said.

We sincerely hope the relevant authorities will help the villagers to rebuild the bridge as soon as possible, because the only means of transport now in small boats.
