We are more than 2 years into the pandemic, but since we are so long into the pandemic a lot of people may be with the mentality :「We are just infected, everything will be okay after the quarantine period!」Hence, they take the SOP lightly.

A Malaysian mother took social media to share a horrible experience that her 5-year-old son went through after the quarantine period. The unexpected event happened the 10th day after the little boy was infected. The doctor diagnosed it’s a post covid complication which might be fatal!

The post read:

A lot of people maybe with the mentality : It’s just Covid! You will be fine after the quarantine!

I can tell you this is incorrect!

I was thinking the same at first, my son will be alright 10 days after the quarantine. We couldn’t believe an unexpected event happened in the middle of the night of day 10th. He slept at 10pm, but he was awake at 1am complaining of stomachache. We applied some oil on him to relieve his pain. However, he was awake for several times due to the pain.

Close to 4am, his condition was getting worst as he was in sharp pain like every 5-10 mins. Me and my husband feeling something was not right and decided to bring him to hospital because this situation never happened before.

When we were on the way to hospital he started to vomit and in severe pain. We reached hospital around 6am, thought after the doctor visit we will be going home. But the doctor said we will need to do blood test + scanning + ultrasound. I was wondering why do we need a scan if it’s only stomach ache.

After the scan, the doctor said:「I need to do blood test to further check whether your kid diagnosed with MIS-C . Because MIS-C is a complication where virus attacking your child’s organ, can be fatal!」 We can’t do anything but listen to the doctor’s advise. His report was out at 4pm the next day. The blood report is ok. But the doctor said :「 It’s the Covid attacking his intestine. Now it’s swollen. I will need to admit him for further observation.」

But the problem is, my child is still in quarantine so it’s a must for him to stay in isolation ward. But, charges for isolation ward is around RM5K and that’s doesn’t included the medicine. My child considered CAT 2. We will need to pay RM15K deposit.

I was thinking if he is going to stay for another 10 days. Then ,I will need to pay at least RM50K? Where to get so much money for his medical fees? But government hospital is fully occupied, moreover my child is not CAT 3 above. The virus didn’t attack his lung, so government hospital will not accept him.

We had no choice but let our son stay in the private hospital for the treatment. I told the doctor once he is feeling better we will bring him home. I’m really broke ( Really really broke). The doctor agreed with that. But no medicine given only Antibiotic + pain killer. ( Because no particular medicine for Covid yet), very much depends on the child’s immune system for recovery.

After hospitalised for a day, my son is feeling better. So, i pleaded to the doctor that he can discharged my son so we can just quarantine at home.

My mind was blank, because my son was in severe pain and keep crying. The only thing in my mind is to relieve his pain as he is really suffering . As a mum, i really don’t know what else i can do for him but only seeing him enduring the pain and cried together.

Yes! I never thought Covid can be that bad. The virus really hurt my child badly. The doctor told me even after quarantine, from week 2 to 6, my child can’t really have fever or else he might be developing with MIS-C. Because MIS-C is the post Covid syndrome in children.

▼ What is MIS-C ?

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a condition where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs. Many children with MIS-C had the virus that causes COVID-19, or had been around someone with COVID-19. MIS-C can be serious, even deadly.

If your child has any of the emergency warning signs listed above — or is severely sick with other signs and symptoms — get care immediately.

To be honest, we really shouldn’t underestimate Covid / Omicron. My son is less than 5-year-old so he can’t be vaccinated. I never bring him out to public places for a long time except for school. We didn’t bring him to anywhere crowded.

Lastly, i wanted to remind everyone, if your kid have fever more than 3 days please bring them for PCR test. Because most of the time virus is not detectable via home test kit.

This is just what happened on my kid. There are many more possibilities that we couldn’t imagine. The doctor said virus can be cunning and hard to estimate.

The following is one of the picture taken when my son was hospitalised. He started to cry since he was admitted to the hospital. I did took some other pictures but i was heart-broken when i looking at it. I deleted the photo and hope it will never happen again.

All the people around me know i’m always careful. But no matter how careful am i, my child is still infected with the virus.

▼ Infected with Covid is not dangerous but the Post-covid do,  some parents thought it’s just food poisoning but that can be fatal  !

▼ Hopefully your son can get well soon!
