Recently, we noticed price hike in goods including food and non-food items. Since a week ago Malaysia and Singapore border re-opened. Even Singaporean was in shocked that a plate of economy rice/ mixed rice cost up to RM10!
According to a netizen’s post in a Facebook page, price for food increased like RM1.50 -RM2 in a lot of food stalls or restaurants in Johor Bahru. Even a noodle soup can cost up to RM9. He sighed and said :「Rising cost of ingredients not proportional to the increase of price of food. Can’t afford but still need to eat!」
▼ Food in JB is more expensive than in KL?!
▼ Not only KL & JB, but one said price for food in Ipoh also increase a lot!
▼(Picture for illustration purpose only)
▼ Some shared: Nasi Lemak RM9.50, prawn noodle RM15.50, Chee Cheong Fun RM11!2 vegetable dishes + 1 fried chicken = RM12!
▼ But from the point of a food vendors: ” Continuously rising cost of ingredients ( noodle, pork, vegetables ) and operating costs ( manpower, rental) have left coffee shop owners with no choice ― but to increase the price of food . “, ” The costs keep increasing, but i only increased the price by RM0.50 even rental is getting higher now.”
▼ One said: I saw a lot of people commenting like ( Don’t eat if you can’t afford, you don’t know market price or cook and eat at home) But anyone thought of it ” Why price for goods hike in Malaysia?!” A lot of us also don’t have high income but sometimes we can’t avoid to eat out . Anyone think before why Singapore able to control their price, except for the higher real estate price. So have your guys think it’s our government that mismanage?!
After this post been widely discussed, another netizen also posted on the Facebook page trying to stand on the food vendor’s shoes to look at the matter. Trying to analyse reason behind the recent price hike.
▼ Thanks post author for voicing it out for us, you analysed the situation well!
Some consumer couldn’t take the sudden price hike. But for some food vendors they are not making money but making a loss! Hence the post author think : Those complaining a lot not sure what is behind those costs!
The post read:
You don’t know what is behind the costs. Yes! I’m talking to you .. ( Knowing that i will be bashed by some netizen)
But i criticised those complaining about the price of the food. You are paying RM10 – 20 for the noodle but i’m sure you do not what is the price of the ingredients so please do not blindly comment.
Price for pork increased about 60% within a year time, from RM10.50 to RM17.50 per kg. Many saying that’s the price before MCO. So the food vendors are already earning less. ( I have no idea which part of the pork but i recalled this is the price i saw)
Price for Chicken been increased like about 40% from RM9.50 to RM12.50 per kg. Price also increased for vegetables, rice, edible oil, salt and condiments .. I’m not sure which items do not have price increased?
“Imagine” you have noodle, minced pork, pork balls, some vegetables , spring onion, ginger and garlic, pork bone soup, eggs and so on. Cost probably around RM5.00( I personally think, maybe it’s not that cheap ), It doesn’t even include manpower, rental and miscellaneous cost. So, even they priced it like RM7.50 to RM8.50 do you still think it’s expensive?
Answer: You think it’s expensive.
But to a food vendor, 1 serving to earn nett profit of RM2.50 to RM3.50. If you averaged out of 40 servings :
- RM3.50 x 40 servings = RM140
- Rm140 x 30 days = RM4,200
- RM4,200 – labour cost RM1500(Min. wages according to the law)profit RM2,700
- Rm2,700 – Rental RM600(some even RM1,000)profit RM2,100
Do you still think they are earning a lot? or simply increase the price?

The costs increase close to 60% which means the profit is 60% less. But somehow they can’t increase price like 60% but to increase RM1.50. However, some will still think it’s expensive.
Therefore, those do not understand what is behind the costs better bring your own lunchbox and cook your own food.
Don’t criticised me! I’m always eating at home because i think it’s expensive to dine in. But the food vendors are not earning much is a fact. Of course those selling 100-200 servings is another story.

▼ Netizen A : RM17.50 for pork?? that’s the price before MCO. Even minced meat selling at RM22.50. Spring onion RM30/kg when price hike and normally will cost around RM18-20/kg. Shallots RM25-30/kg. Vegetables are more expensive than pork. Dried Chilies selling at RM18-20/kg.
▼ Some food seller bought in Econ save. It’s cheaper that wholesale market.
▼ But one housewife said : the cost for a bowl of noodle is not that expensive ( RM5). Maybe around RM2. But that’s only for noodle soup not the economy rice. if you cook at home then you will know the cost but of course if eat out then you will need to know the food seller also need to earn a living.
▼ One said he thing he not satisfied the most is the price increase but get lesser food.
▼ If your salary is RM1-2K, to be honest you can’t afford to eat out all the time.
▼ Some increase price for wantan noodle to RM10.30 but some still RM7.50.. a lot of difference.
▼ “You still can get RM4- 5 meal in Penang. But i think you don’t need to post here to comment about the previous post author that talk about the price hike of the food. Life is tough for everyone and he didn’t even mentioned on the name of the shop and just venting only. ” and another netizen said: if RM8-9 no one complained, everyone just take it then we will need to pay RM10-12 soon.
