Italy Covid-19 Death Toll Spikes To 1,266 with Highest Record of 250 Deaths in a Single day

The death toll from coronavirus in Italy has jumped in the last 24 hours by 250 to 1,266, a rise of 25% and the largest increase in absolute terms since the start of the outbreak, the Civil Protection Agency said on Friday.

The total number of cases in the European country hardest hit by the virus rose to 17,660 from a previous 15,113, an increase of some 17%.

The agency said that, of those originally infected by the outbreak that first came to light in northern regions on Feb 21, some 1,439 had fully recovered compared to 1,258 the day before. In the same time, patients in intensive also rose from 1,153 to 1,328.

60 million people in Italy are under an unprecedented nationwide lockdown as the death toll increasing. Authorities ordered all shops closed except food markets and pharmacies.

Italy’s economy has all but ground to a halt, with Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte describing the outbreak as the country’s “darkest hour.”

Videos have been shared on social media of Italian citizens singing and dancing during a nationwide lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The videos, from various cities and towns, show people singing from balconies and windows in an attempt to boost morale.
