Covid-19 has spreading fast around the world, many countries declared a lockdown and Europe is the worst-affected region especially Italy and Spain. The hospitals even have to prioritise patients with the best chance of survival because the health services are overwhelmed.
Recently, a 90-year-old woman who infected with Covid-19 has died after refusing a ventilator and asking the doctors for using it to save the younger patients.
Suzanne Hoylaerts from Binkom, Belgium, was admitted to the hospital on March 20 after suffering from loss of appetite and shortness of breath.
She tested positive for Covid-19 and was arranged to be isolated. Since then, her condition worsened. The doctors suggested to attach her to a ventilator which supports her breathing but she refused.
“I don’t want to use artificial respiration. Save it for younger patients. I already had a good life.” Hoylaerts told the doctors her reason for refusing and she passed away two days later.
Her daughter Judith couldn’t see her mother since she was placed in isolation. Judith said: “I can’t say goodbye to her, and I don’t even have a chance to attend her funeral.”
Judith added that she did not understand how her mother contracted the virus as she kept staying at home and complied with the lockdown measures.
Hoylaerts sacrificed her life to save the younger people and her selfless action had touched a lot of people. She is a true heroine in our hearts!
