In a tweet Saturday, the network posted pictures of at least two characters who identify as LGBTQ+ including Avatar Korra from The Legend of Korra who identifies as bisexual, and actor Michael D. Cohen from Henry Danger who reportedly transitioned from female to male two decades ago.
Twitter was a buzz Saturday when Nickelodeon posted an artist’s rainbow-colored SpongeBob, fueling the rumours again that the character is gay. Nickelodeon did not confirm nor deny this, and comments for the tweet were turned off.
Others pointed out that the creator, late Stephen Hillenberg who died on 2018, never intended SpongeBob to be gay.
“For the record since “SPONGEBOB IS GAY” is trending off that Nickelodeon Tweet, this is a quote from Hillenberg himself: “We never intended them to be gay. I consider them to be almost asexual. We’re just trying to be funny and this has got nothing to do with the show,” wrote @RiseFallNick.
