We can’t deny the fact that sausages are one of our favourite snack. Let’s just agree with the fact that most of us love to eat sausages especially the small children. Some parents tend to prepare meal with sausages for the children because sausages are easy to prepare.
Although the modern lifestyle seems inseparable from things that are simple and fast but we have to know that processed food such as sausages are bad for you.
According to the National Cancer Institute, 4% of cancer cases in Malaysia are among children in the year 2007 till 2011.
Parents think that sausages provide the same amount of nutrition as the chicken and meat. Not at all.
Sausages are not as healthy as we think it is according to the Nutrition Department of the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) as they are believed to increase the risk of cancer if it is consumed continuously.
First of all, sausages are not real meat. You should know that the amount of micronutrient in processed food is in a very small amount.
The reasons why sausages are not really healthy are because sausages are a type of processed food that has the following characteristics:
▼ High Fat Content
Due to fat’s high nutrient density over consumption of fat can lead to weight gain. Further trans fats and saturated fats may lead to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and trans fat also increases cancer risk.
▼ High Salt Content
Your body needs only 1/4 teaspoon of salt every day. Sodium is found naturally in foods, but a lot of it is added during processing and preparation (sodium & MSG)
▼ High preservative
Preservatives can keep food fresher for longer periods of time, extending its shelf life. Food preservatives also are used to slow or prevent changes in color, flavor or texture and delay rancidity. This preservatives are added in an excessive amount in sausages.
▼ Can improve the level of “evil” cholesterol in the body
Your body needs some cholesterol to work properly. But having too much cholesterol in your blood raises your risk of coronary artery disease.
▼ Increase the risk of obesity and intestinal cancer
Being obese can also increase your risk of developing many potentially serious health conditions, including: type 2 diabetes. high blood pressure. high cholesterol and atherosclerosis (where fatty deposits narrow your arteries), which can lead to coronary heart disease and stroke.
Therefore, it is a must to choose fresh food and reduce the intake of fast or processed food. MOH also added that sausages can increase the risk of intestine cancer.
It is better for us to avoid consuming processed food to maintain personal and family health in a the long run.
