A Singaporean man went to cash out in an ATM machine, he found a bank card that someone left behind. Instead of reporting it, he tried his luck by entering “888888” as the personal identification number (PIN). Surprisingly, he got it RIGHT and withdrew SGD 8,000 (RM 24,000). Thought himself very lucky, but his act has landed him in jail.
According to China Press, the victim Mr. Goh, 46, did some bank transactions on Apr 2 with his bank card in ATM machine located in Toa Payoh, Singapore but he forgot to take his bank card.
The accused Mr. Yap, 39 then found a bank card that the victim left in the card slot of an ATM machine.
Todayonline reported, the accused never reported the incident but trying his luck to key in the PIN. He tried keying in “000000” but that turned out incorrect. Then, “999999” did not work. On his third attempt, he punched in “888888” — and got through.
Yap pocketed the SGD8,000 ( RM24,000) that he withdrew from the account. But soon after the withdrawal, Goh realised an unauthorised transactions on his account and immediately he alerted the police.
The accused was pleaded guilty on Wednesday (Nov 18) to two counts of theft and one count of misappropriating the bank card. He was sentenced to 9 weeks’ jail. Yap then said at first he thought he was lucky and he never thought his act landed him in jail.
I think this is the luck, he now wishes he never had.
