Do you have an electronic scooter? If so, here’s a not so good news for you. Starting January 1 2021, all electronic scooters are no more allowed on road or any area other than the gazetted area. If you insist on riding your e-scooter on those banned area, you will face law enforcement under Road Transport Act 1987.
According to Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department Chief ACP Zulkefly Yahya, the usage of the electronic scooter is only allowed on gazetted area such as playground, pedestrian area and areas around shopping centers.
“Electronic scooter riders are not allowed on the road as it cause discomforts to other road users, besides it can be dangerous as accidents may occurs,” he told the reporters.
So far, the authorities has identifies three areas where electronic scooters are being actively used, which are around Dataran Merdeka, KLCC and Bukit Bintang.
Electronic scooter is still allowed on road as long as the rider has a special license from Road Transport Department (JPJ). Failure to do so, individual found guilty can be punished under Section 54 APJ 1987 with the first time offense will be fined RM300 and second time offense will be fined RM1000 or jailed for 3 months.
To all electronic scooter riders, don’t be sad, you still can ride your scooter in the designated places. And always be careful, so you don’t hurt yourself or other people!
