Do You Know Islamic Credit Card Disallowing “Non-Shariah Compliant Transactions”?

On Jan 23, one netizen took Facebook to rant about his Islamic credit card, as he encountered problem paying for his alcohol.

He wrote in his caption, that he do not need a bank to be his moral guardian, and he claimed he didn’t encountered trouble in paying for alcohol with other islamic version of credit card and questioning is Maybank the only bank enforcing it.

He also shared a picture of a notice from Maybank informing its credit card member that the Islamic credit card cannot be used for “non-Shariah compliant transactions”, a rule that came into effect since Aug. 1, 2020.

According to the notice from Maybank, you will not able to use your Maybank Islamic Visa Infinite Ikhwan on non-shariah compliant transactions on the following merchants categories :

  • Package tores- beer, wine and liquor
  • Cigar stores and stands
  • Funeral services and crematories
  • Dating services
  • Government-owned lotteries (U.S. region only)
  • Government-licensed online casinos( online gambling) (U.S. region only)
  • Government-licensed horse or dog racing (U.S. region only)
  • Betting including lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, off-track betting and wagers at race tracks
  • Government-owned lotteries ( non-U.S. regions)

Maybank Islamic is the bank’s Islamic banking arm and it’s one of the top Islamic bank in the Asia-Pacific region. Besides Maybank, other major banks in Malaysia have Islamic banking as well, including Public Bank, AmBank, Bank Rakyat, and HSBC.

Maybank Islamic CEO Datuk Mohamed Rafique Merican, commented that the card they launched in Dec 2020  aimed at meeting the increasing demand by syariah-compliant and halal conscious businesses.

“Maybank Islamic is committed to provide syariah-compliant financial solutions that meet the needs of our customers and create a positive impact to the community,” he said in a statement.
