The eastern parents in general are more authoritarian and power-assertive. They normally come with thoughts that parents have to take care of their children, paying for their school till they graduate from University and when they started to work. In return, they will take care of their parents. It’s normalcy in most Asean countries.

But not this particular parents of this netizen!

A young netizen took social media to share his parents thoughts of him pursuing tertiary education. Both his parents, full time investor disagreed that he go to private university. Reason being: Return on Investment : RM0 ( No point!) If he insisted to go then he will need to sign an agreement with his parents!

The post read:

Both my parents are Full Time Investor, for them the return come first.

I wanted to go private university, but they don’t agree. Unless i can get in Government owned university, or else i shouldn’t go to university.

They explained, fees for private university will be around RM30-40k annually. So, 3 years down the road for RM100-120k . While, salary for University graduate will be around RM1.9k. Thus, Return on Investment ( ROI) = RM0

Their suggestion is : ” we will give you RM30-40k as investment modal, following our footstep to invest in US share market and start up a company. ROI is higher, then it worth the money. For example, investing in some US company, the return can be more than 10%.” His parents do guide him through, and share with him knowledge on how to do investment.

They said, I’m now 18. It’s time to pay tax and contribute to the country.” It’s not dad & mum responsibility to take care of you anymore. And you don’t have the responsibility to take care of us too!”

If i insisted to go for private university then i will need to commit and sign a BOND SERVICE AGREEMENT with them. After graduated from university, i will need to work in their company for certain period of time as a RISK ANALYST. Of course, pay and benefits will be the same like the rest of the staff. The package comes with basic salary and commission.

Do you think what my parents do is normal? To add on, there is also terms if i breach the contract.

Let’s check out the netizens’ comments:

▼ Most netizens thought it’s OK!

▼ ” Do you want to double-check with your parents, is it really not your responsibility to take care of them?”

▼ Some said it’s not common in eastern countries, but they respect!,” Teach you how to fish instead of feeding you. And they don’t have the thought bringing up kids for the purpose of being looked after in old age.”, ” They wanted you to be independent but in fact already give you a guidelines”, ” They are teaching you the rules and regulations of the real world. You know a lot of people envy your parents’ job.”

▼ ” Your parents wanted to tell you, you need to work hard for what you want. Even go to government owned university, also you will need to have good result. But your parents are nive to you!”

▼” I think you are neglecting a point here, why do you want to go university? do you really want to be a full time investor? If you want to specialise in some field like engineering and accounting then you should go to university. ”

▼” I think this is normal! Parents should tae care of kids till they are 18. Then after that they should be on their own. Your parents imbued you with good thought. 10 more years to go you will see a different between you and your peers”

▼ ” Depends which culture you are looking to determine whether it’s normal. In US, it’s normal. They let you see the real world and teach you to be rational.”

▼ ” A real case study on east meet west!  It’s normal for western culture, after 18-year-old your life completely belongs to you. The western emphasises individuality and self-confidence, which have been seen as cornerstones of economic success.

While, filial piety is considered a key virtue in eastern culture. Even when the kid grow up, parents might be still asking whether they need money or they are ok. It’s always the reason for conflict over inheritance.

But, still it depends on what kind of life you want. Actually for me, private and public university is the same except for the infrastructure.”

▼ ” Hello, is your dad & mum company hiring?”

▼ ” Your dad & mum want to have a god son? ”

▼”One said having a child is a total loss investment, not only losing money, you need to love them some more”

▼ A lot of netizen think he is lucky!

▼” Believe me, you will cried and thanked your parents in future!”
