Mastering another language besides our mother tongue, it’s pretty common in Malaysia. A lot of us, can speak more than 1 language. Especially English, as it’s commonly use in the workplace.

Recently, a netizen took social media to share a WhatsApp text conversation, where one is asking for his name, but he got a reply ” Petaling Jaya”

Although, it’s just a screenshot of a very simple text conversation. But the post went viral and widely discussed by netizens.

▼ A :「May I know how to address you Sir?」

B replied:「Petaling Jaya. 」

▼” Sorry! I can’t help but to laugh! My wound from the operation was in pain”

▼ Special name!

▼ Some worried in the case A is asking my name is XXX and you are? the reply will be「I’m fine, thank you. 」

▼ Some are poking fun on his name.

▼ Some sharing the same experience, ” I will be asking them May i have your name instead”, One said English is hard to understand sometimes, if one asking him Beer on the rocks, he will also be answering” No, on the table please!”

▼ Some experience the same, ” How should i address you?” with an answer ” Senai” & “XXX car wash”

▼ Some even got an answer, ” here lo ( it’s here)”

▼ Lucky he didn’t write the full address. Boom go Employee page admin commented,” It will be really funny if B wrote Jln SS2/X,47300 Petaling Jaya”

▼ One suggesting maybe should ask ” How should i call you?” but some netizens disagree because they worried he will call over instead.

▼ Hey ~ Don’t laugh! One netizen did the search and he really found someone with the name Petaling Jaya.

▼ Some suspected maybe B directly translate from Chinese.

▼ Just in case, this kind of awkward incident happen again. I think we can google translate before answering the question.

▼ Some netizen thought we shouldn’t laugh at those who are not good in English, as everyone is with a different background. Some family are poor and don’t even have enough money for kid’s education. Some have to give up schooling to help the family. So even, their English is not that good, we shouldn’t laugh at them.

▼ However, some said nothing wrong with ” how should i address you ” as it’s more proper than saying,” What is your name?” or “How should i call you?” , because “How should i call you?” do carry a meaning how should i contact you.

I think it’s fine, we can just learn! It’s never too late to learn!
