For the convenient of public, we have several KKM approved self-test kits available in the market. So, individuals need not go to a health facility to make an initial screening to detect Covid-19.

But recently a netizen’s post went viral in Facebook. According to her, her family were using the self-test kit for initial screening. All of them tested negative. Then they went for a PCR test again with all of them tested Positive! She is hoping her experience raise some awareness, even those with self-test kit result negative doesn’t mean you are safe or can go anywhere!

Her post read:

Covid self-test kit that claimed with 96% accuracy, do you still think we don’t have enough cases?!

A lot of you probably don’t understand me, why am i so mad!

Last month, a family member was infected with Covid-19 in KL. Yes, at that moment we were shocked and don’t know what we should do. It’s the first time, someone in the family infected. We were worried the rest of the family members will infected too. Then we heard about the self-test kit, with KKM approval and accuracy up to 96%. We got someone to buy the test kit for us in pharmacy, RM39.90 for 1 test kit, cheap.

The result shown were all negative, we are sort of relief as all the children were tested negative. But after much thoughts, a RM39.90 test kit seems too trivial. Thus, we decided to get the people from Lab to come over for a PCR Test. The result was out on the next day. And OMG!!! The 6 of us were all tested Positive!

This Covid self-test kit is with 96% accuracy, isn’t it? But why all of us tested positive? Only explanation is : It’s a useless test kit.

If someone still thought this kit is so accurate for testing, and if you are positive but tested negative, thought you are fine and still going out then you will spread the virus to more and more people. Who is going to responsible for that?

#Family members are safe now

#PCR is the most accurate test

#If you don’t have money for PCR, please do not go here and there

#I wrote this because this self-test kit can’t be trusted!

#Don’t ask me the brand name

▼ “Shouldn’t be the test kit accuracy problem.. Maybe the way you use the kit is incorrect as my friend didn’t poke the nose deep enough, result shown negative while the doctor using the same test kit. Result was positive!

And another netizen also commented: ” few factors leading to the inaccurate result, error in using test kit, incubation period. You will be tested positive maybe 4 to 5 days after infected Delta. Of course, test kits do have disadvantage too. But we should not deny the use of the test kit just because of 1 case, as nothing is 100%”

▼ ” If you are infected you will need around 5 days after in contact with a Covid patient to show a positive test result. Because, if you do the test too early you will have insufficient virus load for detection. Therefore the result will be negative.”

▼ Some netizens also sharing their experience :

  • My brother tested positive after PCR test, thus my mum wanted to find out the self-test kit accuracy. My brother tested positive with the self-test kit too.
  • With family members infected, it’s better to do both RTK & PCR test. ( RTK tested protein fragments specific to the Covid-19. While PCR detects RNA or genetic material). You can’t just said the self-test kit is useless.

▼ ” RTK(antigen) test give you a quick turnaround time with result reported in 15 minutes but accuracy 60-70%. PCR test with 90%++ accuracy but you will need to wait at least 24 hours. The difference is, if your antigen test result is positive then your PCR will be positive too. But if your antigen is negative, PCR might be positive too. After a year plus into the pandemic, i think we all should have knowledge about it.”

▼ ” RTK test detects virus loaded in your body, you will need to have certain amount of virus / with symptoms only it will show a Positive result. Compare with PCR, relatively the chances of false negative will be higher. And we not only test once but maybe after a week we test 1 more time as the virus do have incubation period.

Reason being government approved the self-test kit is to let public do initial screening at home. It doesn’t mean with test result negative, you are fine. But in the case your test result is positive. You can quickly take action to do self-quarantine, not spreading the virus to others/ seek for medical help.”

▼ One netizen who work in a pharmacy also commented:

” When you do the RTK test( Self-test kit) , your sample ( saliva) will need to have certain amount of virus in order to be detected.

During the incubation period or 5 days before symptom showed normally it’s hardly detected.

If you suspect you infected with Covid-19, please do self-quarantine, do not go anywhere. Repeated the test every 1-2 days.

Those with symptoms can do the RTK test in day 5,7 and 10.

In addition, you will need to have right way to collect your sample and amount of sample must be sufficient.

▼ Even PCR will have false result sometimes. If you are close contact and asymptomatic you should go for PCR test. But in the case of CT value too high it will not be detectable too. Please do not blamed KKM or Pharmacy on your misjudgement.

RTK- antigen test is help on the initial screening to detect the sporadic cases. Malaysia do have tens of thousands cases detected with the RTK antigen test kit.

One netizen also added,” It’s not that the test kit not accurate, but the moment you do the testing, your CT value is too high so it’s not detectable. I’m on of the example. I was in contact with Covid patient . 3 days later i went for PCR test but i was tested negative. On Day 5, i did another PCR test and i was tested positive. This virus do have an incubation period so do not be too happy if you tested negative. In the case, you in contact with a Covid patient. Please do a 10 -14 days self-quarantine.”
