Fully vaccinated individuals in states that are under Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) will be allowed to dine in at eateries, go camping, engage in individual and non-contact sports outdoors, as well as go to night markets starting from Aug 20. Some Malaysian can be seen super excited with the news and started to go out spend times with their family.

Few days back, some facebook page shared some photo where the crowd can be seen in some shopping Malls in Selangor & KL and some parents even brought the kids out to shop. Most netizens criticised parents for doing so. And one doctor also took social media to share her thoughts and urged parents not to expose kids to the risk of catching the deadly virus. As more children are being hospitalised for Covid-19 since the contagious Delta variant becomes more dominant in Malaysia.

Her post read:

The opening for dine-ins and sports/leisure activities does not mean that you can forget the fact that we are still at the 22K cases per day stage. The adults are vaccinated, what about the children?

The enclosed X-ray shows a child’s lungs who was admitted to the ward that I’m stationed in. When we saw the X-ray, we were left dumbfounded. What worries us is that, the symptoms of ‘happy’ hypoxia have begun to appear in children, and finally a Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) machine/ventilator is required in cases like these.

Everyone is gleeful that the government has relaxed the rules for dine-ins and sports/leisure activities. There are also news and reports on the number of confirmed cases albeit high, the number of Category 3 patients is decreasing. The burden on hospitalisation has also been reduced.

Did you know that although the number of adult admissions has decreased, the number of children admission is on the rise? There are 4-9 children admitted to the hospital every day. They are either very serious (above Category 4) or they are very young. That day I was in charged of a 14-day old baby who was admitted to the hospital due to diarrhea which causes the baby to suffer compensated shock, with cold hands and feet.

In addition, even after a child has completed the treatment/isolation period, it does not mean the child is safe. Recently, we have received a lot of post-covid Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). The symptoms are the same as the Kawasaki disease that we fear the most, but in a more severe/aggressive form. Every admitted child either needs to be intubated, or a cardiotonic (cardiac shot). You wouldn’t know how many sleepless nights that the medical team had to stay up to resuscitate/rescue these young patients.

Why is this happening to our kids?

I don’t understand why parks such as the Kepong Metropolitan Park and Taman Tugu are always packed like sardines like having a family party? With 22K cases per day, the parents still bring their kids out to crowded places. They go to supermarket to shop for essentials. You can see kids in Midvalley, Jusco, One Utama, etc. Most of the time, they do not wear masks.

The opening for dine-ins is only valid for adults who have received two doses of vaccine. Why are the children inside the restaurant?

If you do not take care of your child and your child is diagnosed and admitted, and when the doctor needs to insert needles and your child is not cooperating and wailing, as a parent, you should not blame it on the doctor’s skill or cry non-stop next to them. It’s annoying!

P/S: Some commentators said that the new SOP dictates that as long as the parents have received two doses of vaccine each, they can bring their children out.

Credit : MOH ( The latest SOP stated children below 17-year-old are not encouraged to go out to public places. However, if parents completed 2 doses of vaccine wanted to bring them out. They are still allowed go out in public places)

Urm, so? Are you invincible after receiving two doses of vaccine? Don’t forget that your kids have received none.

In this period, if you have time to queue for branded goods (I don’t understand why the shop can open), why don’t you use the money to help those in need? It won’t matter or make much difference if you buy/own one less clothes or bags. But once you get Covid, you might not be able to do anything that you want anymore.

Instead of uttering thank you to the medical staff, your action counts. Try not to bring your children out, especially to crowded places! Now is not the right time to expose them to the world.

Please be responsible for your own health and others too if you have not completed two doses of vaccine.

Maybe you feel tired (with the lockdown). But we are already worn out fighting this endless pandemic war which started 1.5 years ago.

▼ Next wave may come soon where most infected will be CHILDREN.

▼ ” I met a parent brought 3,4 years old kid out and the kid is without the mask. I reminded him and he replied impatiently that he only brought kid out for a while.. sigh~”

▼ One netizen shared a photo, ” This is what happened in Semenyih today!”

▼ Netizen A: I was labelled a bad guy and isolated by my husband because i do not want to bring our kid meeting his parents / relatives. Is it my fault?

Post author : Told your husband, if kids infected asked him to take care of kids in hospital. If those kids infected because of visitors, we as a doctor will normally called to lecture them.

Netizen B: Ask your husband to stay in ICU for a few days then he will know.

▼ Netizen C : As what you said mostly children patient in Category (Cat) 4, why are you saying Cat 3 reduce and hospital in lesser burden?

Post author : Cat 3 is lesser for adults. But all the category reported in the data is during patients’ admission. So, it’s not recorded in the data when they turned into Cat 4 or 5. For children, it’s fast for them to change from Cat 2 to Cat 4,5.
