Breathtaking House Makeover: Old Single-Story Terrace House Transformed to Minimalist, Modern Home!

It supposed to be an old second hand single storey terrace house, but after a massive makeover. It took our breath away looking at the brand new house!

▼ Netizens are in awe : “Amazing~ I like it so much!”, ” Looks comfortable”, ” Can keep this as our reference next time.”, ” As long the design is good. Old house always create a lot of possibility!”

A Malaysian couple spending close to a year to makeover their old house. Post author mentioned most of the idea of the interior design came from a social media platform~ XiaoHongShu. She as well took the opportunity to share 9 important details to take note during the renovation!

The post read:

1 House. 2 of us. 3 meals. 4 seasons. After roughly a year, our dream house is finally ready! Less is more!

Our design is more to Minimalist style, serenity and simple beauty creating us the cosy space.

I came across minimalist design in XiaoHongShu. Clean lines, timeless aesthetic but achieving the look it’s more deliberate and frankly it’s not just about choosing a few piece of furniture for a white backdrop.

Reason being for the massive renovation is to make the house more spacious. We changed the layout of the house, hacked most of it except for the beam and the side walls.

The house used to be single storey but we extended an additional floor as our master bedroom.

House renovation is not an easy task, especially major renovation like us. Most of the time, other than work I basically was in the new house supervised the renovation work. Everyday with lots of details to discuss with the contractor. I will be using the remaining time to browsed XiaoHongShu and checking out Interior design and renovation related posts.

To be honest, XiaoHongShu is a very good platform for those who plan to renovate their house. I’m getting a lot of idea from the platform. While for the design, everyone do have their own idea. Thus, you should do your research and tell your designer what style you prefer.

If you are going to start your renovation soon, then you will need to do a lot of homework and not only rely on the designer and contractor. I’m sure you will satisfy with the outcome. Some furniture and decorative items, you can try to get it in TaoBao. The items are more stylish and cost effective.

Many people asking me who i assigned the renovation job for my house? Here i wanted to share. We basically have 2 teams, the designer team and contractor team.

Except for furniture and some accessories, other were all taken care by the contractor. The contractor is also architect for some housing projects. Hence, i’m kind of worry-free to let them take charge. The designer mainly help me to design including the 2D, 3D electricity mapping. And they have their own furniture factory too.

Many will be asking: 「Why spending so much to renovate an old house?」 But, i think it worth all the penny as you will be able to renovate the house to your dream house like everyday staying in a homestay. That’s the reason why are we working so hard.

There are a few points to take note before/during the renovation:

  1. Pre-plan where you want to put your appliances and furniture before the team mapping out the electrical circuits. Only when you pre-plan then only they can map out everything accurately.

You will realised pre-planning everything will make your life easier when you move in. Or else, you will see wire hanging on your wall. Let say night time you lazy to turn off the light, then you better have a 2 way gang switch to turn off your light on your bedside table.

2. If you wanted an open kitchen. Then you will need a good hood. I recommended Livinox slanted hood with twin motor, the suction is stronger. I tried frying something in the kitchen but the hood managed to remove odours, smoke and grease that are released into the air while cooking.

3. Opt for a large format floor and wall tiles, at least 2×2 minimise the width of your grout joints then the flooring will look simple & nice.

4. To make your space uncluttered, you will need to organise all your stuff nicely. If your financial conditions allowed please make more cabinets. So, you can keep all the stuff and make your space looks clean and clear.

▼ Supposed to be a column here, so we designed something like a cabinet to cover it.

▼ Also, you shouldn’t waste the space under the stairs, you can make it a store room for meter box or some bigger items.

5. It’s better to decide which model and brand in advance for electrical appliances like electrical stove/ build in gas stove, hood, oven.  So you know exactly the sizes as you will need those measurements for your cabinet.

6. I will advised you to make the built in wardrobe to the ceiling. So, you will not have a space for dust.

7. If you also thinking to re-do the flooring, i will suggest to go for SPC as it’s more water-resistant.

8. While for the kitchen sink get a big as possible, the one that can even fit a big pot is even better. I preferred the pull-out type of kitchen faucet, it’s really convenient!

9. Don’t over-do the ceiling plaster,  as the design easily outdated and best spot to accumulate dust.

There is a lot details for renovation, probably i can’t listed them all. But, you can always check out XiaoHongShu, i’m sure it will be helpful!

▼ After the make-over!

▼ Most of the netizen are concerned on the renovation fees: ” My concern is how much you spend on the renovation?”, ” At least RM150k”, ” Renovation charges more than RM200k?? But the design is really nice!”
