Titan, a five-person submersible made by OceanGate Expeditions, had been traveling to the Titanic wreckage site and went missing for 4 days. Sadly the search ended in tragedy, with Coast Guard officials saying it suffered a “catastrophic implosion” that killed the five passengers onboard.

The plot of Season 17’s tenth episode, titled “Homer’s Paternity Coot”, includes the protagonist Homer Simpson and his long-lost father, Mason Fairbanks taking an underwater trip on a submarine. During the episode, they discover a shipwreck filled with treasure.
Later at some point, Homer’s submarine gets stuck around a coral reef, as he panics the submarine flashes a low oxygen sign. Luckily the episode has a happy ending as Homer and his dad are rescued.
While tweeting the stills and clips from this episode many people drew parallels between Homer and his dad Fairbanks with business magnate Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son, Suleman, who were on the OceanGate submersible.
Mike Reiss, a former producer and writer on The Simpsons, told the New York Post that the 2006 episode was inspired by the American action thriller film Crimson Tide which involves a U.S. nuclear submarine.
Interestingly, Reiss also told the media that in 2022, he and his wife also undertook a journey on Titan to see the Titanic wreckage.
