Danish artist, Jens Haaning was commissioned to paint the art piece for the museum. But when the museum staff opened the canvases, it’s completely blank. The cheeky title of the commissioned artwork? Take the Money and Run.
The museum of modern art in Aalborg paying Haaning an amount of 532,549 Danish krone ( RM357,950) to recreate two earlier works by Haaning.
Jens Haaning is a Danish conceptual, contemporary artist living and working in Copenhagen. Haaning has produced plenty artworks since the 1990s, which attempt to offer an acute reflection of a complex and changing society in the West.
The museum had asked Haaning to update two of his previous works, which used actual money to show the average incomes of Denmark and Austria.
The museum transferred the necessary fund to the artist. But instead of delivering art using real money given, Haaning had a twist. The title was changed to “Take the Money and Run.” And the museum accepted it.
But the museum staff can’t believe when they opened up the box containing Haaning’s piece, they found two empty frames. The artworks were meant to be filled with cash but now the banknotes were absent.
He pocketed the money and called it a new conceptual art. The museum wanted its money back, but the artist has no plans to return the money.
However, Haaning has been ordered by a Copenhagen court to repay most of the money as well as the legal fees.
Another art piece also made a headline in recent years. A banana duct-taped to a wall at Miami’s Art Basel in 2019 sold as an artwork for USD 120,000 ( MYR 564,960) – and then was eaten by performance artist David Datuna at the art convention.
