Scam Alert: Hack Into WhatsApp & Impersonating “Sister” to Borrow RM5K!

Latest scams! Scammers hacked into WhatsApp account impersonating your family and friends to borrow money for emergency use!

According to China press & Sin Chew Daily, latest scams on WhatsApp are swindling more and more innocent victims out of their hard-earned cash. Some are lucky as they found out last minute like this netizen do.

This incident happened in Penang, a netizen – Ms. Lim’s sister suddenly send her a WhatsApp text and told her she was over limit to transfer some money and need to transfer RM5,000 urgently.

Ms.Lim never thought it’s a scam as the WhatsApp account belongs to her sister. She was thinking to send the money once she reached home. But, her “sister” kept texting her and asked her to transfer the money.

At first, she was worried her sister fall into the scammer’s trap . But after calling her sister only she realised she is the target of the scammer instead. She was nearly falling into the trap.

The text read: 

Scammer : Are you busy? Can you help ? Can you transfer me RM5k? I need it urgently and will return to you tomorrow, ok?

Me: Why do you need RM5k?

Scammer: Personal use, are you convenient to borrow?

Me: Is it a scam? Why do you need such a big amount of money?

Scammer: Once i done settle the matter i will tell you. Don’t worry! it’s not a scam. Can you help me?

Me: Ok! I will transfer to you once i reach home.

Ms. Lim then realised her WhatsApp account was hacked. The scammer was impersonating her sister. But when her sister checked the WhatsApp conversation, no record showed that she need to borrow money. In the other words, her sister had no idea she borrow money from her.

Then Ms. Lim trying to text the sister in WhatsApp to check whether the account is still active. Then she realised the “real sister” and “scammer sister” conversation were all in the same text dialogue, that’s unbelievable!

Ms. Lim ( 29 years old) is residing in Penang, while the sister ( 37 years old) residing in Bukit Mertajam.

Ms. Lim told the media outlet,” Scammers are using the sneaky tactic to trick us, as we never know our phone or WhatsApp is hacked! The phone number and profile picture is exactly the same like my sister. Thus, i don’t see a reason why i don’t believe in the WhatsApp text conversation.”

Ms. Lim added they lodged a police report on the same day and the police officers told them it’s not a new tactic as they received a several reports from the victims. The previous scam cases, at least you will notice an account is hacked. But as for this scam tactic, you will never notice your account is hacked because you will never ever see the text conversation between the scammer and then victim as it’ll not appear in the text dialogue.
