Uncle Roger, the comedian that gained his fame after a scathing but humorous review of an egg fried rice video in BBC Food. The UK-based Malaysian Comedian Nigel Ng aka Uncle Roger took IG stories to share with his followers that he is ” Back in Malaysia! (Just in time for lockdown here)”
He mentioned in the comedy podcast with another comedienne Evelyn Mok dated Jan 7 that he is coming back to Malaysia to “see parents” and admitting himself a lockdown “refugee”.
But, Haiyaaa~~~ Uncle Roger is busy busy now as recently he was involved in a controversy when he uploaded a video collaborated with a popular American food blogger and YouTuber Mike Chen titled, “Uncle Roger DISGUSTED by UGLY DUMPLINGS”. However, the clip itself did not discuss anything about politics but only purely review the ugliest dumplings ( jiaozi, bao, wonton…) making by one of the Asian chefs who lives in America.
But, Mike always criticized the Chinese government on its own social media platforms, he used to write posts about human rights abuses in Hong Kong. He against China’s Uighur Muslim minority and highlights Beijing’s pursuit of the Falun Gong, a religious sect that has been banned by mainland authorities.
On Tuesday Uncle Roger posted a message on Weibo apologized to his followers in China, and said he deleted the video after realizing the content might have a negative social impact and added, “During the collaboration between me and Mike Chen, I wasn’t aware of his political thoughts and the incorrect remarks he had made on China.”
“As a Malaysian-born Chinese, I love Chinese culture, and it’s the reason why I created this channel. I wanted to share with everyone, better and funny content. Hopefully, everyone can give Uncle Roger who just started off his channel in China a chance to improve himself.”
However, Mike also wrote in his IG pertaining to this matter. He wrote, ” I hold no animosity towards Nigel for what he did because it’s hard to stand up to the CCP(Chinese Communist Party)’s tactics. I do hope that he learns more about the human rights abuses that the CCP has committed because he lives in a free country where he can do that.”
Uncle Roger faced public backlash after deleting collaboration with Mike and some netizens thought the popular Facebook comedian was kowtowing to the Chinese government and loves RMB (Renminbi) more.
The criticism against him didn’t just stop after his public apology but there is even an online movement #UnsubscribeUncleRoger going on.
