Brunei Man with COVID-19 Was at 10k People Mosque Gathering in KL and Shopping Spree in Miri

The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced today that about 10,000 people had taken part in a religious gathering at Masjid Seri Petaling, Selangor, between Feb 27 to March 1 where a 53-year-old Bruneian national infected with COVID-19 was also present. This will be the first Covid-19 case in Brunei.

Brunei’s health authorities said the man went to the mosque gathering at Masjid Seri Petaling, then flew back to Miri Airport via a Air Asia Flight AK5651on Mar 3.

He then went across the Miri border back to Brunei by land via the Sungai Tujuh immigration checkpoint, 35km north of Miri city. Then on Mar 6, he travelled again by land to Miri and went on a shopping spree.

The Sarawak State Disaster Relief Committee, said they were trying to trace those passengers who were seated near the man during the KLIA-Miri Air Asia flight on March 3.

“The Mosque gathering involved 10,000 people, where estimated 5,000 were from Malaysia. All Health Departments are conducting further investigation into the matter in their respective states,” Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

He called on “those who attended the gathering to cooperate with the Health Ministry to ensure that COVID-19 does not spread in the community”.

Those who show symptoms can go to their district health department, state Crisis Preparedness And Response Centre (CPRC) or check out the virtual health advisory from the Health Ministry’s website for more information.

As for those not showing any symptoms, they should practice social distancing by keeping a one-metre distance from other people for 14 days.

He added that all mass gatherings should be postponed while people with respiratory symptoms should avoid crowds.
