Heart-Broken Mother Says,” My Daughter Ended Her Life Because Of Workplace Bullying”

Her 20-year-old daughter working in Singapore, was believed been bullied in the workplace. Sadly, she chose to end her life. Although, she passed away last year but the incident surface again after her sad mother posted the incident on social media.

On August 2019, the 20-year-old girl from Malaysia was employed to work in a company provided vision related services in Singapore. The 43-year-old mother told media, she was a therapist.

The heart-broken mother said during her time at work she’s been scolded ” stupid, idiot and brainless” by her boss and all sort of verbal abuse. She had been accused sleeping during her work hours too.

Beside that, she was asked to do job out of her job scope including distributing flyers, plan holiday itinerary. Even, her weekend leave was deducted after she took a sick leave.

But, the two incident that led to the her suicide was believed to be the leave that she applied coming back to Malaysia.

“My daughter applied unpaid leave to come back to Malaysia to attend relative’s funeral. The boss’s wife approved the leave. However, she kept receiving call from the boss to ask her to go back for work.

“Then, she applied a 6 days leave to attend a wedding, the leave was first approved then reduced to 4 days. My daughter accepted the arrangement. But, she was fired before her leave with the reason she didn’t complied to the terms in the contract, and she need to compensate tax payment closed to SGD 1,000 (RM3,000)”, said the mother.

Reason being she worked in Singapore because she wanted to relieve her father’s burden in paying his brother school fees. She never thought her move wasn’t help and she would need to pay for the compensation. Feeling depressed, she chose to hang herself on Dec 19, 2019 when no one was at home.

The heart-broken mother thought of going to Singapore to report the matter to the authorities regarding the unfair treatment and workplace bullying for her daughter. However, their financial conditions doesn’t allowed her to do so.

Following that, lockdown due to the pandemic also stopped the progress on the matter until one of her daughter ex-colleague, Miss Tu, 40, help the mother to lodge a report to the Human resource department, Ministry of Manpower in Singapore. While the mother lodged a police report in Malaysia.

The Singapore Human Resources department contacted the mother on Oct 29, and they will open a case to further investigate on the matter.

Nearly a year after her daughter passed away only the boss from Singapore called the mother to apologize. However, the boss denied on unfair treatment and said her daughter was fired because of her work performance.

Lastly, the mother told him,” It’s too late to apologize, we decided to take legal action against you and hope justice will be served.”
