YM: I need a portrait on the both of us based on our previous travel photo

A: Sizes are depend on what kind of painting you want. You can also let us know what size you want. Most client will choose either A5 or A4 because it’s easier to select the frame.
YM: OK ! Then you help me to choose the biggest one. But, not too expensive, because i don’t have a lot of budget and i will need to buy her some other present.
A: Sorry, the price is based to the material and the sizes of the painting. Of course, the price will be relatively higher if it’s bigger and complexity of the colours.

YM : Then i want the cheapest and biggest one, help us to draw one that we travelling at the seaside, with the sun & beach. You help me to look for the picture. I don’t know how to choose. And i need it tomorrow.
A: So rush~ I will suggest client with limited budget to choose a smaller size. It’s cute and economical. In term of timing, normally need to take a few days. So i don’t take last minute job.
YM: I can top up. You help me to choose a size.
A: Mind to tell me what’s your budget? Let me see how to help you.
YM: At first, my budget is RM10. Now i can top up another RM10. I want a bigger painting and draw me more things.
A: Are you serious?
YM: ??

A lot people might be surprise, a portrait paintings only worth RM10 ?! RM20?! ~ You thought buying veggie in the market?
But to be frank, in general Malaysian don’t really appreciate art work of professional artist. Somehow, also the artist to be blamed as they lowered the market price.
I used to see caricature artist charging RM20 for A3 couple portrait with background when i was young. At that time, i don’t have much thoughts. But now, after so many years, no one is looking into the inflation rate and still charging RM20 for a A3 portrait. Thus, i said artist is the one who spoiled the market.
A lot of newbie will also worried no one will give them business. Thus, drawing for free in the hope the people will come back. Not long ago, some even using the apps filter to pretend it’s their artwork and charging RM10-20. Thus, i’m hoping if you are an artist as your profession, please look into your own value.
You are spending so much time & effort on a piece of artwork. Of course, it won’t worth only RM10 or RM20. You also need to pay rental and bear your own living cost.
The lowest i saw was RM3 for an A4 size. How many portrait you need to draw in order to cover your living cost?
